Enrofloxacin
Enrofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used exclusively in veterinary medicine to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is not approved for human use due to potential toxicity and the risk of fostering antibiotic resistance.
Class and mechanism of action
- Fluoroquinolone antibiotic:Enrofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics, which are noted for their broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
- Bactericidal effect:It is a bactericidal agent, meaning it kills bacteria directly.
- DNA inhibition:Enrofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes crucial for DNA replication, repair, and synthesis. By blocking these enzymes, the antibiotic prevents bacteria from multiplying, leading to cell death.
- Metabolism:In many animals, it is metabolized by the liver into the active compound ciprofloxacin, another potent fluoroquinolone antibiotic used in humans.
Common veterinary uses
Enrofloxacin is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including Staphylococcus, E. coli, Klebsiella, and Pasteurella. It is used to treat infections in many species, including dogs, cats, cattle, swine, poultry, and exotic animals.
Common clinical uses include:
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Respiratory infections
- Gastrointestinal infections
- Ear infections (otitis)
Side effects and risks in animals
While generally well-tolerated, enrofloxacin has several potential side effects and cautions.
In dogs:
- Cartilage damage:The drug can cause abnormal cartilage development in young, growing puppies, especially large breeds.
- Gastrointestinal issues:Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.
- Neurological effects:In rare cases, especially with overdose, seizures and loss of coordination can occur.
In cats:
- Retinal damage:Higher doses in cats can lead to retinal damage and blindness, which may be permanent.
- Other effects:Less common side effects can include elevated liver enzymes, lethargy, and aggression.
Other risks:
- Necrosis:Injectable forms can cause severe tissue necrosis if administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously.
- Environmental contamination:Overuse can lead to environmental contamination and foster antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Important precautions
- Veterinary use only:Enrofloxacin is for animal treatment and can have toxic effects if ingested by humans.
- Age and species restrictions:It is not recommended for puppies in their rapid growth phase, and higher doses should be avoided in cats.
- Drug interactions:Avoid giving enrofloxacin with multivitamins, antacids, or dairy products containing calcium, iron, or aluminum, as these can interfere with absorption.
- Judicious use:Veterinarians often reserve enrofloxacin for serious infections where other antibiotics have proven ineffective, to help combat the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
